The best post-apocalyptic-survival games like Fallout 4

Updated: Apr 30

With the buzz around Amazon's Fallout TV series, the popularity of Fallout 4 has surged. Join the excitement by exploring a curated list of games similar to Fallout 4. These are the best apocalyptic games on your Steam Deck and Rog Ally Z1E.

If you have not played Fallout 76, the latest addition to the Fallout series, you should. The game has received several patch updates that have improved the gameplay, and the community is excellent, too.

Among the must-plays on our list are the classics Fallout 1, Fallout Tactics, and Fallout 2, as well as fan favorites Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and, of course, Fallout 4.

10 Post-apocalyptic survival games like Fallout 4

The Sinking City

The Sinking City

The Sinking City is a Third-person shooter story-rich RPG that places you in the 1920s east of the United States. The half-submerged city of Oakmont is grouped by supernatural forces. You play as a private investigator trying to uncover the truth of what has possessed the city and corrupted the minds of its inhabitants.

The combat could be better, but it has a nice story. The game's look and feel are post-apocalyptic, similar to Fallout 4. It plays great on the Steam Deck and Rog Ally Z1 Extreme without tweaking the settings.

I just started playing this game on my Steam Deck, and yes, it runs great with FPS above 60. The game instantly reminded me of playing Fallout 4. The combat is sluggish, which is a bit surprising, as this game was released in 2021. However, the weight of choice matters in this game and can affect how you play it.

The graphics are not the most beautiful. In fact, the game looks a bit out of touch with all the games released in the same year. But the game has enough story and voice acting to back up what it lacks. I have not had the chance to play on my Rog Ally yet.

Starfield

Post apocalyptic game
Starfield

Starfield is an action RPG that can switch between Third-person and first-person at any moment. Explore vast planets, face engaging combat situations, and customize your ship and crew.

Created by Bethesda, everything you can do in Fallout 4, you can do in Starfield; as people say, Starfield is Fallout in space. This does not mean Starfield is no slouch regarding the gameplay. Starfield has taken the perk chart from Fallout and improved on it by allowing players to improve their skills as they play.

When I first saw Starfield, I thought this game was going to be bad; once I got my hands on it, I was wrong. Starfield may be the most comparable game on this or any other list. It follows Fallout to the letter. One is because it was developed by the same company. The combat was fun. The story had its moments at times becoming dull, but overall, the game was great to play.

I am currently playing on the Asus Rog Ally Z1 Extreme, and it is running great with medium to low settings. Unfortunately, I have not had the chance to play on the Steam Deck because it is not verified, and it did not seem like it was worth the time and effort to test out.

The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds is the definition of what a Fallout game should be. It was created by Obsidian, the same team that developed Fallout New Vegas. If you are looking for a game with post-apocalyptic heroes, this is the perfect game for you to play.

It's another game I enjoyed playing when it was first released. I have not yet had the chance to see how this game performs on the Rog or Steam Deck, but I am looking forward to making another playthrough on one of the handhelds.

Bioshock Trilogy

Bioshock will always be the go-to game or trilogy to compare any game to. It is the perfect mixture of what a post-apocalyptic survival game should be. You can even say it was ahead of its time. One takeaway about Bioshock is that it is not open-world like Fallout 4 is; instead, it is more of a linear game, but the atmosphere is the same.

This game series holds a special place in my nostalgia, and I was ecstatic when I ran them on the Rog Ally Z1E. All three games run perfectly on the Rog, and it's worth the money to play on the go.

The Wasteland Series

The Wasteland Series

The Wasteland series perfectly combines a post-apocalyptic survival game with turn-based combat. Yes, the combat is different from the last few Fallout games, but if you are looking for that apocalyptic feel, Wasteland, Wasteland 2, and Wasteland 3 are the games to keep you occupied.

I have not played much of this series, and the only thing I can really tell you is that when I first played it, it reminded me of Fallout and Fallout Tactics. The game is slow, and that is on purpose because of the style of combat and how heavy your choices can make the outcome. If you want a post-apocalyptic game, this could be your cup of tea. I have not had the chance to play this game on either of the handhelds.

Days Gone

Days Gone puts post-apocalyptic zombie games meets biker-crazy syndrome. Now Days Gone is not the first game to have zombie apocalyptics, but it did not disappoint in the excitement. Take on hoards of zombies and post-apocalyptic-factions while trying to find the truth about your lost lover. Is she dead or missing?

This game had to grow on me the first 10 hours I played it. It was one of those games I had to be in the mood to play, so I gave it a chance on the Rog Ally and the Steam Deck OLED. You can play this zombie apocalyptic on the go with the right settings.

Elder Scrolls: Skyrim

Skyrim

Skyrim does not have the same atmosphere as the other games on this list. In fact, it is not even a survival game. However, what this game has in common is the core of what makes Fallout 4 and the other games so fun. This game allows player choice to alter how the game takes place. If you choose to help, steal, or even murder, the consequences can affect your playthrough.

I have not had the chance to play this game on either gaming handheld.

Metro Exodus

Metro Exodus

Metro Exodus is a first-person action shooter set in an apocalyptic world. Like Fallout, It is a post-apocalyptic survival game that forces players to make heavy choices that can affect them later.

For the brief time it takes to play, Metro Exodus proves to be a challenging post-apocalyptic survival game because of its difficulty. Plus, you can take it on the road. I think it did not run the best on the Steam Deck.

State of Decay 2

State of Decay 2

State of Decay 2 is different from Fallout 4, but the similarities are in the base building. Like Fallout 4, you can focus on building and gathering material for your base. If you see survivors while exploring, bring them back to help keep your base safe.

I have not had the chance to play this game on the PC handheld.

7 Days to Die

7 Days to Die

7 Days to Die is a sandbox zombie survival game that lets you fortify and build your base settlement. This game is fantastic because you can constantly adjust the zombie threat level, allowing you to focus on your settlement.

I have not played this game on the Rog Ally or the Steam Deck.

These are some of the best apocalyptic games you can play on your Rog Ally Z1 Extreme and Steam Deck. While only some games are verified, the Steam Deck will not run them. Nevertheless, this does not include the Rog Ally; if you install it, the Rog will do the rest.
